Julie Fowlis is from North Uist, a small island in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, now based in the mainland Highlands of Scotland. She sings in Scottish Gaelic and spends her time touring around the world performing Gaelic music and song. She is an accomplished musician as well - playing Highland bagpipes, whistles and even oboe & cor anglais.

She was recently awarded the BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award 2006 for Best Emerging Artist and was also voted Gaelic Singer of the Year 2005 at the Scots Trad Music Awards. She is very chuffed about this and her Mam and Dad have the awards up in the living room.

Julie Fowlis burst onto the wider music scene in 2006, when she became the first ever Scottish Gaelic singer to win a prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Award. Since winning the Horizon Award for best newcomer, she has won the hearts of audiences around the globe, played every major festival in Britain, showcased in Texas and New York, and is in constant demand as a performer of Gaelic music.

The songs she was brought up with in the Hebrides can now be heard just as regularly on more mainstream BBC Radio and other stations throughout the world as they can be at home on Gaelic radio. This was shown in her ground breaking nomination just 8 months later for Folk Singer of the Year 2007 at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Her natural charm, humour and animated story telling have become almost as appealing as her “heart-melting vocals” (Scotsman). Her first English tour in 2006 proved a huge success, and 2007 promises to be yet another adventure with the release of her eagerly awaited follow-up album “cuilidh”.
