When first witnessing Kate Miller-Heidke wow audiences at the Port Fairy Folk Festival it was easy to be astonished by her dizzying vocal range, charmed by her mischievous lyrics and intrigued by her penchant for melting and blending genres and styles into a sound uniquely her own. Her latest album Curiouser sparkles with all that makes Miller-Heidke such an intriguing pop-tastic proposition.
There is the occasional operatic flourish, an infectious rhythmic core, echoes of the New Wave and a quirky playfulness that just makes you want to hear more. As always, her lyrics are a real treat. For instance, on God抯 Gift To Women she sings, 慖f you抮e God抯 gift to women / then God got it wrong / she got it wrong!?while on the dance-floor filling Can抰 Shake It she confesses, 搈y sense of rhythm is incontrovertibly shite / I can抰 fake it.?
There抯 something incredibly endearing about this tongue-in-cheek approach to songwriting as it highlights the irreverent, unaffected down-to-earth character of Miller-Heidke.
One of the attributes of her work that inspires repeated listens is the deft use of layers. In other words, there is a hell of a lot of interesting stuff bubbling under the surface of each song. I Like You Better When You抮e Not Around, for instance, features some stunningly complex backing vocals and momentary, blink-and-you抣l-miss-it bursts of almost Queen-like fretwork that brings a sonic depth to the track.
After immersing yourself in this fine example of shining pop ?coming wonderfully soon after her debut Little Eve ?audiences will no doubt be willing to throw themselves at the mercy of Ms Miller-Heidke once more. Even more so, you simply know that her live show is going to knock your socks off.
